In the hills of Yagara and Turrbal Country, where ancient marker trees once guided communities, BRIJ emerges as a meeting point for different knowledge systems.
Long before Brisbane’s streets were drawn, ‘Boggo’ was a site of healing, wisdom and gathering — a heritage we proudly acknowledge as we create new beginnings. BRIJ seeks to be welcoming place for all, recognising that First Nations communities were the original doctors, scientists and innovators on this continent.
We are aiming to embed First Nations perspectives into BRIJ’s design and research approach — creating an inclusive space where Indigenous thinking guides sustainable solutions and celebrates Queensland’s living heritage.
This is our opportunity to learn from the oldest continuous culture in the world to work towards reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Through mutual understanding and respect, we are creating new shared histories together where we can reconnect with Country and learn from each other.
“This place has always held knowledge and voice. Since time immemorial, Country here has held our people through a partnership of care. That knowledge still exists here; it is in the very ground we walk on.”
– Local First Nations community member
